Susan and Stephen

I was introduced to Susan by a neighbour who told me her friend was currently in India but getting married in the summer and needed a Wedding Planner.  We chatted a bit over email but it wasn’t until Susan returned to Ottawa that we both quickly realized that we were destined to come together as a power planning team.  Not only did we have my neighbour in common but we had both attended the same high school!  Since Steve lived in the USA and the wedding was in Ottawa, Susan was starting to feel overwhelmed at the number of decisions required for planning a wedding in eight months.  Susan needed my help with planning her wedding but also a sounding board so that when she went to Steve for input we had already narrowed down the options.

I instantly fell in love with her colour scheme as she showed me pictures and fabric samples from her sari and her bridesmaids’ saris, invitation paper she had sourced in India and of course inspiration photos.  Susan wanted vibrant colours but was also concerned about it being too over the top.  The decor and florals were to be “Indian inspired” but with Steve being American we wanted to make sure it wasn’t only representing Susan’s heritage.

Their wedding day was a sunny day in August and as the guests arrived, many in saris, it was instantly filled with colour.  It was an emotional day filled with some tears, many laughs and also lots of fun.  Susan made sure to include her mom who had passed away into her wedding day.  She asked me to work her mom’s wedding band into her bouquet so she would have her Mom with her all day.

With three outfit changes as well as hair and makeup, Susan was able to work in her Canadian and her Indian heritage into their wedding.  Even Steve had an outfit change into a traditional men’s Indian Kurta that was a comfortable change after wearing a suit in August all day!

The guests enjoyed Indian and Canadian/ American cuisine and were blown away by a surprise Bollywood dance performed by Susan and Steve as their first dance.  I will miss our meetings as I truly enjoyed working with these two.  I wish them all the best as they finally get to live their newlywed life in the same country!  A special thank you to Kristin De Castro from Union Eleven Photographers for being a sidekick all day and capturing everything so beautifully.

Allison and Alex

Erica Irwin Weddings and Events As Seen In Wedding Bells 2016 Fall-Winter Issue

Alex’s proposal to Allison was a perfect foreshadowing to their wedding day. He proposed on a romantic snowy Christmas Eve in 2014 at their home over an unforgettable chef-inspired meal by candlelight accompanied with her favourite red wine.

Their wedding day proceeded as a dreamy winter wonderland in January 2016, accented with endless candles and deep red roses, burgundy bridesmaid dresses and the most delicious food and wines to match. They chose the Ivy Lea Club as their venue located in the 1000 Islands because they loved the idea of a romantic weekend getaway where they could enjoy the company of all their friends and family. The ceremony took place in the second floor loft, which featured vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the stunning backdrop of the Saint Lawrence River at sunset. The reception was held on the main floor, which featured gorgeous iron chandeliers, a large dancefloor surrounded by stone fireplaces and warm mahogany accents.

January 9, 2016 was recorded as one of the warmest days that month, which made for perfect outdoor photos, as you will see in this portfolio. Alex looked so handsome in his charcoal grey suit and Allison looked stunning and timeless in an elegant wedding dress emphasized with lace and crystal accents. She was simply radiating with beauty from the joy and excitement of the day.

Allison had a very clear vision of what she wanted in terms of florals and décor. She envisioned rich burgundy roses, blush and pearl accents with a touch of lace and of course plenty of candles. Allison also included personal homemade touches to the décor, which included hand-sewn table runners made by her mom and hand-carved birch table number holders made by a close friend. I can still remember the looks on Allison and Alex’s faces when they saw everything come together so perfectly on their wedding day. This moment is always such a precious one for me!

I am so happy to have been a part of this day, working with Allison and Alex was always a lot of fun and usually involved a glass of wine. I told Allison she wins the prize for most organized bride to date!

Special thank you to Anne-Marie Bouchard of AMBPhoto, who even though was very pregnant at the time, captured this wedding so beautifully that it was published in Wedding Bells Magazine Fall/Winter 2016.

Stylish Romantic Wedding on the water| Britannia Yacht Club | MIV Photography

Carley and Warner

Warner is from Costa Rica and as he said in his speech, he came to Canada for a job and to snowboard, thinking one day he would go back home.  Until he met this stunning blond dental hygienist with a killer smile.

When I met Carley and Warner, I was truly excited to work with these two.  They had some great ideas and were genuinely looking for help to turn it into a plan.  Since they had chosen a wedding day that was about two years away we weren’t rushed to pull things together.  As Warner is from Costa Rica, he wanted something by the water if possible with some colour.  No white, cream and blush wedding here!

We settled on mint, peach and gold.  Carley wanted some glitter too, not too much but enough to make it more formal. For the venue, they chose Britannia Yacht Club and loved the idea of being able to take photos by the water and stand on the upper deck watching the sunset.  Since it was to be a Catholic ceremony, what better place than the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in downtown Ottawa!

They both love to dance so having great music to keep guests on the dance floor was important.  They kicked off the dancing with a beautiful cha-cha for their first dance.  It was so much fun watching all the Costa Rican guests join in and really show off their dance moves.  Of course there was some limbo too!

When their wedding was over, I really missed these two.  Spending almost two years together, you can’t help but get attached.  I wish them the very best with their new growing family!

Special thank you to Miv Photography, who is not only extremely talented but also very fun to spend the day with!

Intimate organic wedding | Rivermead Golf Ottawa | AMBphoto
Sarah and Glen

I was introduced to Sarah by her very dear friend Lori from Showpony Hair and told that Sarah and Glen wanted to be married sometime that year. I met the newly engaged couple that week and they told me ideally they wanted to get married in the next few months because many of their close friends were in the wedding industry and they knew if they wanted them to attend, the wedding had to be sooner than later. Like within 2 months soon. I really LOVE last minute weddings, they are actually a ton of fun to plan!

They wanted something intimate, like a big dinner party with excellent food, wine and beer. I immediately thought of the Rivermead Golf Club and luckily for us, they had an opening for early May! Sarah and Glen loved the wrap-around porch for ceremony, the terrace for cocktails, the formal dining room with fireplace (and mantle) for the gourmet dinner. Plus being a golf club, there were many options for photos.

With 80 guests, everyone that attended was either family or a close friend. Guests were greeted with a photo wall where Sarah and Glen had lovingly chosen a photo of each of them. It was a wonderful sight to watch guests arrive and see a memory of themselves with the couple. It instantly made them feel honoured to be a part of this special day.

The decor and flowers were fresh and had an organic look and feel. It was elegant with a touch of rustic with Belgian linens, navy napkins, slate stone vases, wood crates and galvanized buckets holding warm blankets for guests. The beautiful florals included ivory, greenery, dusty miller and succulents. Glen is an avid outdoorsman so we worked in antlers here and there even!
One of my favourite touches was that Sarah asked a few key bakers in her family to make their famous cookies or squares for the dessert buffet. Not only were these family members honoured to bring something to the wedding but guests noshed on these homemade treats asking for recipes.

It was a beautiful day in May that I will always remember. I loved meeting their amazing families and know that this beautiful wedding was the perfect start to their even more beautiful marriage.

Special thanks to Anne-Marie Bouchard of AMBphoto for capturing this truly blessed day.

Ottawa Wedding | Carol & Bo – Stonefields Heritage Farm

Ottawa Wedding | Carol & Bo – Stonefields Heritage Farm

Rustic Elegant Barn Wedding | Stonefields Heritage Farm | Themotions Photography
Carol and Bo

When Bo and Carol were just teenagers they moved to Canada to finish high school because their parents wanted them to have opportunities that only Canada could offer them. They went on to college and met, fell in love and then it was time for a wedding! When I first met with them they told me they wanted a true Canadian wedding. They had never been to one before so it was up to me to describe many of our traditions and customs. They wanted a rustic yet elegant setting, one that for their families from China would be very unique and “Canadian” with lots of wide open spaces. They wanted only Canadian cuisine with many maple syrup infused dishes. There would be cowboy boots, poutine, cheese fondue, a barn and a vintage car as well. That’s where Stonefields Heritage Farm would come in. The decor would be rustic, country and organic, with lots of greenery, flowers, white and green. Carol wanted a showpiece archway to use at the ceremony and then again as a back drop to the head table.

Carol and Bo wanted the whole wedding to be a nod to their new home country and for their family traveling from China to also fall in love with Canada. It was truly a special night and a very emotional one for me as I thought about the implications of the one child law in China, watching their parents just bask in the day that their child was married . As a mom of four amazing kids, I will get to hopefully do this four times but for these parents this day was extra special knowing this was the wedding they would attend for their child.

I love staying in touch with this fantastic couple especially seeing pictures of their new baby boy Grant!

Big thanks to Themotions Photography for the beautiful photos included here and for making my clients feel extra special all day long.
